“As much as talent counts, effort counts twice.” A powerful quote by Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. My next guest on The Richard Robbins Show couldn’t be a truer reflection of this. His diligence, determination and grit are the reason he was the #2 agent, out of 50,000, on the Toronto Real Estate Board for 13 years straight.
Derek Baird, now an established 31-year veteran as a real estate professional, averaged 300 transactions a year by himself! The question is, how? Derek says, with humble confidence, “I’ve never had a bad year, but I think it just boils down to getting up and going to work.”
Effort combined with powerful marketing, market intelligence and effective prospecting have made Derek a top performer for over three decades.
Derek didn’t begin his working career in real estate. He was one of the first graduating classes of industrial electricians GM ever produced and, actually, just recently started receiving his pension. While working 40 hours a week at General Motors, Derek began working part time in real estate and sold 69 houses his first year.
He has been practicing real estate with his wife Laurie for over 30 years. From the early days of wielding a 15-pound laptop to open houses, to now running his own team in Courtice, Ontario, one thing has remained true for Derek when he says, “I don’t know anybody that is successful that doesn’t work hard.”
In this episode of The Richard Robbins Show you’ll learn the secret to Derek’s professional longevity, how to improve your sales by improving your prospecting and why it’s crucial to not only know your market but to understand and teach it, as well.
