I’ve worked with a personal trainer for years. It’s kept me healthy and motivated, and I’ve learned a ton about exercise physiology and the body. What it’s also done, though, is keep me consistent.
Health isn’t like cramming for an exam–pulling an all-nighter just isn’t going to get you there. You’d never expect to exercise really hard once a month and get in shape, so why do we expect it to work in business?
I recently spoke at the 4th annual REMAX European Convention in Vienna, and had the good fortune to watch some top producer panels. It was obvious from listening to the stories of successful professionals that consistency was a common ingredient.
Consistency in Direct Mail
Husband and wife team Virginia and Wayne Munden spoke about geographical farming, which has produced great results for them. Like exercise, however, success was about consistency. Years ago Virginia sent out 30,000 pieces of direct mail and then sat back and waited for the phone to ring. Her hopeful anticipation quickly turned to disappointment when she received zero calls.
Instead of doing a large mail drop once, she soon discovered that the secret was to do smaller mail drops two to three times per month. Instead of 30,000 pieces at once, she gets better results from 1000 pieces three times per month for 10 months.
(Hey if it was as easy as sending 30,000 pieces once, everyone could be successful!)
Consistency Online
Top producer Mark Arnstein has been very successful using video with his YouTube channel NorthTorontoLiving. He creates cool and entertaining videos of his listings, interviews new businesses in the area, and talks about upcoming community events. We even did a quick video together that he posted on his site in minutes from Vienna.
Mark spoke on stage about how to become a neighbourhood rock star and his message had the same common theme as Virginia and Wayne’s: consistency. A long video once in a while doesn’t work. Short, entertaining and informative videos done regularly do.
The Difference Between Good and Great
In real estate, like any business, there are more marketing options than there is time and money. What they all have in common is that they don’t work if they’re just done once in a while. They need to be done with absolute consistency.
Consistency is what makes the difference between the good and the great. The good do what the great do sometimes, but the great do what the great do all the time.
